    Alcatraz ... first of all, if you want tickets get them online several weeks before you go don't wait til you get there. It's hard to believe that they are sold out about a week in advance. I would say that the biggest surprise is the overall state of DISrepair of the buildings and facilities. I spoke with a couple of the National Park Service folks and they said that money is hard to come by. They only get $1 for every tour. We took the Audio Tour which was very well done and all the areas we saw on the tour were very well restored. After seeing movies set in Alcatraz, I thought the prison proper would have been much larger. Also, the island is a bird sanctuary and since it was baby time much of the island was off limits.

    A pilgrimage to Tommy's Joynt was also necessary. I had gone there several times when I was stationed out here in the 60's and 70's. I remember it being larger but the decor was the same.
